Bid accepted for County Nursing Home improvements

Oct. 10--JEFFERSON -- County Commissioners accepted a bid for improvements at the Ashtabula County Nursing Home.
The Ashtabula County Board of County Commissioners at their Oct. 1 meeting accepted a bid not to exceed $524,997 which includes $486,135 for Richfield-based Johnson Laux Construction Ohio for improvements to the facility on Dibble Road in Kingsville Township. The bid also includes $38,842 for IAP Government Services, which handled the bidding process and will handle project management.
The bid will cover all required supervision, labor, materials and equipment necessary to complete renovations to the nursing home, according to the resolution.
Constance Eyman, Ashtabula County Nursing Home Administrator, could not be reached for comment.
J.P. Ducro IV, Board of County Commissioners president, said a variety of improvements made at the nursing home.
"They are fixing up a lot of the dated areas of the nursing home," Ducro said.
The county utilized IAP Government Services to put the project out to bid and handle the reporting an project management along the way, Ducro said.
"They take a percentage of the overall project cost to do that, but then we don't have to try to supervise something that really isn't the expertise of the commissioners or anyone at the nursing home," Ducro said.
In other business, commissioners approved at their Tuesday meeting this week accepting a $417,333 grant for the Ashtabula County Drug Court. The grant provides $139,111 annually for three years to the drug court for operations.
Ashtabula County's drug court was the first such court in the state to receive certification from the Ohio Supreme Court in 2008, at a time when there were only 64 drug courts in the state.
Today there are 170 drug courts in Ohio and 245 specialized dockets in the state like veterans, mental health and family support courts.
Drug court officials could not be reached for comment.
