NRVDRC to feature exhibition of art by veterans NRVDRC to feature exhibition of art by veterans

Roanoke Times - 4/15/2018

An exhibit featuring art by veterans of all ages and abilities will be presented at the New River Valley Disability Resource Center beginning Tuesday, April 17, and running through Saturday, May 19.

The public is invited an opening reception on Tuesday, April 17, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. to socialize, enjoy the art, meet the artists and connect with the NRVDRC. The exhibit will be open for viewing during regular business hours, Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Seeking to connect those with disabilities - both physical and mental - into the local community in a meaningful and visual way, as well as to inspire thoughtful communication, was the goal for inviting military veterans with disabilities to participate in an art show. Participants of all ability levels were encouraged to submit art. The themes are not limited to military subjects.

"We are interested in the struggles, highlights, issues or everyday beauty of life as experienced by veterans with disabilities," said Felta Virginia, a local artist who served as the exhibit curator.

The NRVDRC's mission is to assist individuals with disabilities to live as independently as possible, including advocating for and creating an environment accessible to all. People of all ages with all types of disabilities directly govern and staff the organization. The agency serves the counties of Floyd, Giles, Montgomery and Pulaski counties and the towns within them, and the city of Radford.

The New River Valley Disability Resource Center is located at 53 W. Main St. in Christiansburg. For more information, visit www.nrvdrc.org.
