What is the Caregiver Tele-Connection?
A project to support caregivers through technology and human interaction by:
- Providing a safe, confidential, telephone session program
(tele-learning) to empower and connect caregivers
- Targeting caregivers who are socially isolated and do not have extra income for caregiver assistance
- Linking isolated caregivers with each other for support
- Building upon and creating a link to existing community supports for caregivers and their loved ones
What are the goals of the Caregiver Tele-Connection project?
- To improve the quality of life and well-being of people who are caring for a loved one
- To create a caregiver network of long-term services and supports building upon community assets
Why caregivers need Caregiver Tele-Connection:
- Approximately 1 of every 7 Americans is a caregiver today
- Most caregivers are ill-prepared and provide care with little or no education or support, often suffering from poor health themselves
- 40 to 70% of them have symptoms of depression
- Depression is highly associated with suicide attempts
- Depressed caregivers are more likely to also have anxiety disorders, substance abuse or dependence, and chronic disease
- 22% of caregivers are exhausted when they go to bed at night, and many feel they cannot handle all their caregiving responsibilities.
